Mental Health Training

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. MHFA is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid, and having mental health first aiders in the workplace is most likely to become mandatory at some point.

Health and Safety

The Health and Safety executive updated its guidance from November 2018, asking employers to consider ways to manage mental health and employee well-being.

Parliamentary debate

January 2019 saw an overwhelmingly backed motion to introduce legislation to put mental and physical health on equal footing through workplace first aid regulations.

Why do we need it?

Mental health issues are a major cause of employee attrition. One in four people have actually left a job due to mental ill health, and two out of three people have considered leaving a job due to well-being issues. With mental health issues on the government agenda this is now an essential topic to address in the workplace both for commercial reasons and employee well-being.

MHFA England training courses teach participants to spot the signs of mental health issues, offer initial help and guide a person towards support. They don’t teach people to be therapists, instead they provide the skills to people to listen and respond so they can give reassurance and support: – This could be either in a mental health crisis, or potentially to reach out to someone and prevent a crisis from happening in the first place.
